Next to your furnace and your electricity, your water heater is your home’s third most important system. Your water heater is responsible for heating all of the hot water that you use for bathing, washing clothes, and washing dishes. You may even use hot water straight from the tap for cooking and/or cleaning. Face it; without the water heater, everything that requires water in your home would be turned back in time by more than one hundred years, and you would either have to bathe and wash with cold or boil it on the stove.

Now imagine what would happen if your water heater broke down. It does happen since most water heaters are not designed to outlast their warrantied years. If you buy a water heater that says it’s a “six-year” or “nine-year” water heater, that is probably all you are going to get out of it.
You will notice that your water heater is going when one or more of the following occurs:
- It takes a long time to get hot water to come out of your tap–it’s not instantaneous as it should be.
- You get a lot of yellowish or rust-colored sediment flowing out of the tap with the hot water. (This is a good indicator that the bottom of your water heater is rusting out and sending flakes of metal into the pipes with the water.)
- There is a slight rumbling in the pipes when you turn on the hot faucet or a whiney sort of sound.
- The hot water stops being hot after a few minutes, remains barely tepid for several minutes, never warms at all, and is as cold as ice. (This indicates that your water heater may be officially dead, or the heating coils inside are done, or that the pilot light is out if you have a gas water heater.)
If you notice any of the above, call us right away. Do not ignore these signs and just think that your hot water is behaving strangely because of cold weather. You want to catch the problem before it turns into a much more expensive situation.

Water heater repair often involves something small, such as replacing an ignition switch or welding a pipe into a more closed position so that it does not leak. However, most of the problems with water heaters are internal, and since water heaters are essentially two large cylinders, one housed within the other and welded tightly shut, it is impossible for the plumber to crack it open to fix anything inside. When the problem with the water heater is no longer external but internal, your plumber will advise you to replace the entire unit.
